Yellow Barn Celebrates the Music of Lei Liang; New CD on Bridge Records

The 2014 Yellow Barn Music Festival is host to a unique lineup of concerts and discussions, with a focus this year on the music of composer-in-residence Lei Liang. The composer’s residency opens with a portrait concert on July 28 featuring a selection of solo works including Some Empty Thoughts of a Person from Edo for harpsichord, My Windows for piano, Feng for cello and In Praise of Shadows for flute. A series of performances follows, with works to include Garden Eight for solo piano, Trio for cello, piano and percussion, Winged Creatures for harpsichord, two violins and cello, Five Seasons for string quartet and pipa, and the world premiere of Lakescape III for solo viola.

Several additional works by our composers can be heard at Yellow Barn throughout the summer. The season opened on July 4 with a performance of Kurt Weill’s Four Walt Whitman Songs featuring soprano Tiffany du Mouchelle and Jörg Widmann’s Wandrers Nachtlied, for five instruments and soprano, which received a performance on July 5. The season also features performances of Colin Matthews’s Oboe Quartet No. 1 on July 12, as well as Gerald Barry’s Bob on July 29, and Jonathan Harvey’s Chu alongside George Benjamin’s Octet on August 2.

On July 8, Bridge Records releases a Lei Liang Portrait CD including works from the past decade of Liang’s chamber music output. The album includes recordings of Lake, Lakescape II, Serashi Fragments, Gobi Gloria, Lakescape, Listening for Blossoms, and Bamboo Lights. The all-star lineup of performers includes the JACK Quartet, Callithumpian Consort, The Cicada Chamber Ensemble, The Awea Duo, Rootstock Percussion, and Musicians from soundSCAPE.
