Wolfgang Rihm Named Winner of 2015 Grawemeyer Award
Dec. 03, 2014
Wolfgang Rihm, one of the world’s most celebrated and prolific living composers, has been named the recipient of the 2015 Grawemeyer Award from the University of Louisville for his orchestral work IN-SCHRIFT 2. Commissioned and premiered by Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic in 2013, the work commemorates the 50th anniversary of the orchestra’s iconic concert hall. To celebrate the hall’s unique acoustic and architectural properties, IN-SCHRIFT 2 explores the boundaries of musical space, with the musicians positioned at different locations within the auditorium.
Mark Satterwhite, Grawemeyer Award director, comments:
The 15-minute piece incorporates spatial effects and other inventive techniques to evoke a wide range of sound and emotion. The work evokes dark colors and uses mostly low instruments – no flutes, violins or violas, for example. It begins and ends in quiet and mystery, taking many interesting paths along the way.
