Toshio Hosokawa's Im Nebel Wins 62nd Otaka Award

The NHK Symphony Orchestra has elected Toshio Hosokawa’s Im Nebel, for trumpet and orchestra, as its 62nd Otaka Award Work. The prize, founded in honor of composer and conductor Hisatada Otaka, is awarded annually to an outstanding orchestral composition written by a Japanese composer. Im Nebel is Hosokawa’s third work to win this prize; the first, Ferne-Landschaft I, was named the 37th Otaka Award winner, and his Re-turning was elected for the 50th Otaka Award.

Of the work, Hosokawa writes:

This trumpet concerto was inspired by Hermann Hesse’s famous poem Im Nebel. The trumpet represents man, and the orchestra represents nature and the mist that surrounds it. In the vast, blind world, the trumpeter walks alone; then sings to the world while keeping to itself the memories of the glorious past and the intense storm. The orchestral instruments draw various soft, curved lines, like those from Eastern writings. The soloist’s trumpet eventually lets itself fade into the world of mist; simultaneously confronting and reconciling with the world.

Co-commissioned by the Suntory Hall International Program for Music Composition and the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), Im Nebel received its world premiere in 2013 by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra led by Jun Märkl and with soloist Jeroen Berwaerts. Berwaerts gives the German premiere on March 6 and 7, with Matthias Pintscher conducting the NDR Sinfonisherorchester in Kiel and Hamburg, respectively.

On June 27, Ken Takaseki leads the NHK Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the work as part of the orchestra’s annual "MUSIC TOMORROW 2014" concert at the Tokyo Opera City. The concert also features the world premiere of Atsuhiko Gondai’s Utopia-nowhere,op. 142.
