Kamran Ince Portrait Concert at Present Music

On August 30, audiences in Milwaukee were treated to a portrait concert celebrating the 20 plus year relationship between composer Kamran Ince and contemporary ensemble Present Music. The program, titled ”Ince by Ince”, included five of Ince’s works conducted by the composer and performed for the first time in Milwaukee: Asumani, Dreamlines, Partita, Two-Step Passion and Zamboturfidir.

Led by artistic director Kevin Stalheim, Present Music and Ince have enjoyed a successful collaboration for over two decades — something that Ince says almost “never happens” among composers and contemporary music groups. With over 10 commissions from the ensemble, Ince notes that Present Music has recorded “probably a good third” of his works:

We're like family in a way. I can try various different things, change things, play with things and they are open to it all. They are such eager musicians and not standoffish at all. I really know them, and I can really be free.

Present Music will record the works for an upcoming release on the Innova label.
