Julian Anderson's The Discovery of Heaven in US Premiere with the New York Philharmonic

Julian Anderson’s The Discovery of Heaven receives its US premiere this month in a performance by the New York Philharmonic. The program, led by Sir Andrew Davis, takes place on April 24 at Avery Fisher Hall, with additional performances on April 25 and 26.

The first performance, which took place in 2012 with Ryan Wigglesworth leading the London Philharmonic Orchestra, was praised by The Financial Times as a score that “sounds like the work of a 21st-century Debussy.” Dedicated to Jonathan Harvey, The Discovery of Heaven was awarded the 2013 South Bank Sky Arts Award. Anderson introduces the piece:

[The Discovery of Heaven] is a three-movement work inspired by the novel of the same name by the Dutch writer Harry Mulisch. Other influences on the piece include the music of Japanese Gagaku (or Court Music), which dates from the 9th century AD, and the music of Janáček.

A recording of The Discovery of Heaven, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, is now available on the Philharmonic’s label.
